Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the “Humanities Core” curriculum?

Answer

The short answer: It is the integrating of the humanities courses, History, Composition and Literature, and Philosophy/Theology (Biblical Worldview) to enable students to link thoughts and communicate them in the way the brain naturally functions. To separate courses as “progressive education” introduced in this country in the early 20th century “divides and conquers” the mind and leads to compartmentalization of thought and actions. The more complete answer: The foundation of the “Core Curriculum” is an interdisciplinary approach to education that interrelates subject areas while providing a strong biblical base. For instance, while your child is studying Ancient History, he will read quality literature, including the Bible, and will work on writing assignments, all from that same time. Core C through Core F are based on the approach developed by David Quine in his Cornerstone Curriculum. Starting Points by Quine, at the heart of the Core C curriculum, helps the student to develop a solid biblical worldview through studying the Scriptures, American history and literature. As David Quine exhorts us, Christians are to examine everything carefully, evaluate ideas – testing and proving all things – discerning which ideas are true from the vast array in the world, and then we are to “hold fast to that which is good.” The backbone of Cores D, E and F is World Views of the Western World, also by Quine. Students in this three-year program will combine history with composition and literature (or Rhetoric), as well as Western Civilization (Philosophy/Theology, Apologetics, History, and Political and Economic Theory), all from the same time period. The three fold purpose of this approach is to give our children: 1) The ability to stand against the thoughts and ideas of the secular culture, 2) An adequate and logical defense for the hope they have within them, and 3) The ability to take the truth of Christianity into the various disciplines. Students that complete the Core program at PEP will be well equipped to think and reason well while adequately communicating their thoughts and ideas; these are the future leaders of our culture!
